Introducing Helen's Creative Sanctuary
The Seaside Studio
Tucked just behind Helen’s fisherman's cottage in Torcross, South Devon, the Seaside Studio is a quiet, light-filled space where each piece of Helen Butler jewellery begins its journey. A few steps from the shoreline at Slapton Sands, the studio sits within a small enclosed courtyard, opening onto a sheltered south-facing patio.
Originally an old fisherman's storage shed, and then an outbuilding used for boards and bikes, the space has been thoughtfully transformed into a dedicated jewellery workshop. It has plenty of light and opens onto the peaceful patio, creating a calm and grounded environment that feels deeply connected to its surroundings.
From inside the studio, Helen can hear the sea - a constant, gentle presence that brings a sense of focus, inspiration and stillness to her work. It is here in her studio that ideas take shape, orders are prepared, and collections come together, influenced by the textures, forms and quiet details found along this stretch of the South Devon coastline.
Torcross village sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the vast sweep of Slapton Sands on one side and the unique landscape of Slapton Ley Nature Reserve just across the road. This rare meeting of fresh water and sea - where the two exist side by side but never fully merge - creates a rich and ever-changing natural environment. It’s a place of subtle contrasts, and one that continues to inspire Helen’s work in both form and feeling.
After years of working in shared spaces, having a dedicated studio has brought a new sense of clarity and rhythm to Helen's making and creative process. The space itself is still evolving, a work in progress, shaped slowly over time, just like the jewellery created within it.
And, more often than not, Helen is not alone at The Seaside Studio. RedRobin, her Irish Terrier, is a regular companion in the studio, quietly keeping watch and occasionally stepping in to supervise the day’s work.
