Inspired by the Coast: How Nature Shapes Each Piece

Living by the coast means you sometimes start to notice things differently.

It’s not just the sea itself, but the details - the patterns in the sand, the shapes of shells, the way the light changes throughout the day, the soft and dramatic natural environments that surround it.

These small, often overlooked moments are where most of my ideas begin.

Many of my designs are inspired by real finds along the South Devon coastline. Shells collected from beaches like Torcross, Salcombe and Lannacombe, each shaped slowly over months, years or decades by the movement of the sea.

There’s something incredibly grounding and humbling about that process. Nature doesn’t rush, and neither do these pieces.

A shell might be smoothed over for by the ocean for many years before it’s found. A shape might only reveal its beauty once it’s held, turned, and really looked at in a given light or at a certain time of day.

When I cast these pieces into silver, I try to keep as much of that natural character as possible. The textures, the imperfections, the small details that make each one feel real.

It’s not about creating something overly polished or perfect. It’s about capturing a moment - something that already exists - and giving it a new life as something you can wear.

Even the colours I’m drawn to are influenced by the natural coast. Soft sea glass tones, muted silvers, and natural finishes that feel easy to wear and timeless.

Every piece is a reflection of the place it came from. And for those who feel connected to the sea, it becomes a small way to carry that feeling with you, wherever you are.

How to Choose a Meaningful Piece of Jewellery

Choosing jewellery isn’t always just about what looks best, it’s often about what feels right.

A piece might catch your eye for no obvious reason, or remind you of a place, a person, or a moment you want to hold onto.

That’s usually a good place to start.

For many people, the most meaningful pieces are the ones that carry a connection. It might be a shell that reminds you of time spent by the sea, or a shape that simply feels familiar.

Some are drawn to symbolism, a spiral representing growth, a starfish symbolising renewal, or a shell as a quiet reminder of resilience. Others choose something because of how it fits into their everyday life.

Can you wear it all the time? Does it layer easily with other pieces? Does it feel comfortable and effortless? These questions are just as important as how it looks and feels.

Jewellery is often gifted too, which adds another layer of meaning. It might mark a moment, celebrate something special, or simply be a way of saying “this made me think of you”.

Over time, these pieces become part of your story.

They’re worn daily, taken on holidays, kept close without much thought, until one day you realise how much they mean.

There’s no right or wrong way to choose. But if a piece feels like something you’ll keep coming back to, that’s usually a sign it’s the right one.

From Shoreline Finds to Silver: The Story Behind the Jewellery

There’s something about the sea that stays with you.

For me, it started long before jewellery - collecting small treasures from the shoreline, pockets filled with shells, stones, sand, seaweed and anything that felt a little bit special. or interesting. Even now, that same feeling hasn’t changed.

Helen Butler Designs grew from that quiet instinct to notice, collect and create.

After moving to Devon, I found myself drawn back to making again. A jewellery course reintroduced me to working with metal - the tools, the process, even the smell of it all felt so familiar, and so right. It took me straight back to being a child, always making something with my hands. It felt good for my soul.

What began as a small workspace in the corner of my home utility room, has grown into my Seaside Studio in Torcross, where I’ve been creating jewellery for over 20 years. It’s a place shaped by the rhythm of the coast - the sound of the sea, the changing light, and the constant inspiration of the landscape around me.

Many of my pieces begin as something real. A shell found on a beach walk, a shape noticed in nature or the sand, a reflective moment looking out over Start Bay at night, or small object picked up and kept without really knowing why.

These are then carefully cast into silver, or created from the vision in my mind's eye, preserving their natural textures and forms, and turning them into something that can be worn every day.

For me, and for many of my customers (as they enjoy telling me), each piece carries a unique connection to a place, a moment, or a memory.

But what I love most is that once it’s yours, it becomes part of your story too, that meaning and connection continues to grow. Whether it reminds you of the sea, a person, or a moment in time, my hope is that it feels like something special - something to wear, to keep, and to come back to again and again.
