Meet Helen...

Helen Butler is a South Devon based jewellery designer and maker, creating handcrafted silver pieces inspired by the coastline, natural forms and the quiet details found along the shore.

Her journey into jewellery began not as a plan, but as a gradual return to something she had always loved - making, something she has now been doing for over 23 years!

Early Beginnings...

From a young age, Helen was drawn to creating with her hands. Whether it was sewing her first dress at nine years old, making dolls’ clothes, or building miniature furniture, there was always a natural instinct to design, shape and experiment. That early creativity stayed with her, even as life took her in different directions.

After moving to Devon, a visit to a small independent jewellery shop in Dartmouth sparked something deep inside her. The space, filled with pieces by makers from around the world, planted the first seed of an idea, one that would quietly grow over time.

Not long after, Helen spent six months living in Chamonix, in the French Alps. Surrounded by the shifting colours and sculptural forms of the glaciers, she found herself deeply inspired by the natural world in a new way. The soft aqua tones of the ice, the changing light, and the textures of the landscape stayed with her, influencing her earliest creative Helen Butler Design ideas.

On returning to the UK, Helen enrolled in a silver jewellery making course in Devon. From the very first session, something special really clicked. The process of sawing, soldering and shaping metal felt instinctively familiar, taking her back to her school metalwork classes - a favourite subject that had long been left behind.

What began as a course quickly became a renewed passion.

Balancing Life & Building Confidence...

At the time, Helen was balancing life as a mum to three young children. Jewellery became something she could grow into gradually, learning, practising and developing her skills alongside family life. It offered both creative focus and a sense of calm during a busy and often demanding time.

With guidance from a local jeweller in Dartmouth, whose gallery had sparked that very early seed, Helen set up her first workspace - a small bench in the corner of her home utility and laundry room.

From these early beginnings, her first collection was created and displayed in the same shop that had originally inspired her. Seeing her work being liked and bought by customers marked a turning point for Helen, building both confidence and direction.

Over the past 23 years, Helen has continued to develop her work, creating jewellery that reflects both her surroundings and her personal connection to place.

Helen Butler Designs Today...

Now based in Torcross, between Dartmouth and Salcombe on the south coast of Devon. , Helen's work is deeply influenced by that same South Devon coastline. From the beaches and shoreline to the ever-changing light and textures of the natural environment that backs it. Long walks along the South West Coast Path and time spent by the sea continue to spark new ideas and shapes within her collections.

Each piece is designed and crafted by Helen herself, using solid silver and materials sourced within the UK. Many of her designs begin with shells and natural elements collected from local beaches, which are carefully cast into silver, preserving their original form while giving them lasting weight and value.

Helen's Values as a Designer & Jeweller...

Her approach to design is guided by elegant and contemporary simplicity, wearability and meaning. In Helen's own words...

"My pieces are created to be lived in - worn daily, layered, and kept close - whether that’s a necklace that becomes part of someone’s everyday routine or a bracelet that travels through seasons and stages of life."

What Helen values most is the connection her jewellery creates. Many customers return year after year, often sharing their own stories of why they chose a piece, who they bought it for, or what it represents to them. Whether it’s a necklace worn as a reminder of home, a gift passed between generations, or a piece chosen to mark a meaningful moment, these connections are at the heart of her work.

Her collections are worn across all ages, from younger customers choosing their first pieces to those building a collection over time. The simplicity of the designs allows them to move easily between styles, collections, occasions and generations.

Today, Helen continues to run her business independently, balancing the creative process with the rhythms of seasonal work, local events and coastal life. While the business has evolved over time, the core of it remains the same - a deep connection to place, a love of making, and the quiet inner joy of creating something that becomes part of someone else’s story.
