From Shoreline Finds to Silver: The Story Behind the Jewellery

There’s something about the sea that stays with you.

For me, it started long before jewellery - collecting small treasures from the shoreline, pockets filled with shells, stones, sand, seaweed and anything that felt a little bit special. or interesting. Even now, that same feeling hasn’t changed.

Helen Butler Designs grew from that quiet instinct to notice, collect and create.

After moving to Devon, I found myself drawn back to making again. A jewellery course reintroduced me to working with metal - the tools, the process, even the smell of it all felt so familiar, and so right. It took me straight back to being a child, always making something with my hands. It felt good for my soul.

What began as a small workspace in the corner of my home utility room, has grown into my Seaside Studio in Torcross, where I’ve been creating jewellery for over 20 years. It’s a place shaped by the rhythm of the coast - the sound of the sea, the changing light, and the constant inspiration of the landscape around me.

Many of my pieces begin as something real. A shell found on a beach walk, a shape noticed in nature or the sand, a reflective moment looking out over Start Bay at night, or small object picked up and kept without really knowing why.

These are then carefully cast into silver, or created from the vision in my mind's eye, preserving their natural textures and forms, and turning them into something that can be worn every day.

For me, and for many of my customers (as they enjoy telling me), each piece carries a unique connection to a place, a moment, or a memory.

But what I love most is that once it’s yours, it becomes part of your story too, that meaning and connection continues to grow. Whether it reminds you of the sea, a person, or a moment in time, my hope is that it feels like something special - something to wear, to keep, and to come back to again and again.
